Intro: [00:00:00] Hello and welcome to the Posers podcast, the place where we skip the fluff. Say the quiet parts out loud and dig into what really matters. This is where photography, psychology, and business collide. I'm Jody, your host, and I'm bringing you my raw takes, hard wins, and a whole lot of unfiltered honesty about what it takes to build a photography business that actually connects and makes money.
So ladies, grab your headphones and get your tits up and your ears open because we are going to build something really incredible together.
Jodi Hendricks: Hello, hello, hello, and welcome back for another episode of The Posers podcast.
We are going to talk about something really big today, because we are going to talk about fear. And obviously I'm not gonna talk about the type of fear that keeps you physically safe, but the kind of fear that is more like a sneaky little bitch that whispers in your ear just enough to keep you sabotaged.
So [00:01:00] it's that fear that convinces you that you need a better portfolio, or you need a better website, or you need a little bit more money, or you just need a little bit more confidence before you do the thing. So it's that fear that kind of like disguises itself, like, in the corners of your life, the corners of your brain.
Because here's what I've learned. The photographers who build extraordinary businesses are almost never the ones who feel the most ready. They're the ones who decide before they ever feel ready. And today's guest, yes, surprise, surprise, we have a guest, is the absolute most perfect example of that. Lara Stansbury flew all the way over from St.
Louis to do another round of branding photos with me. And when we realized that she had an extra day in my city that lined up with my calendar, for once, surprisingly, I had an open slot on my calendar, I jumped at the opportunity to record an episode in person with a woman who has [00:02:00] seriously blown me away in the last 12 months.
In 2024, Lara's photography business actually lost $30,000. She was completely in the red, and she wasn't just thinking about closing the doors, she was closing them. She had reached the point where she had decided that it just wasn't working anymore. So the doors were about to shut, but simultaneously, even though she didn't know this, as she was contemplating closing her doors, my team and I were deciding if I was going to create a mastermind or if I was going to do a line of digital courses for photographers.
And Funny enough, I had my mind set on doing courses, but my team knew how powerful the mastermind would be, so they convinced me to launch the very first round of the Posers Mastermind, and that is where Laura sort of slid into my life. Now, obviously, I had never run a mastermind before. I had [00:03:00] no testimonials.
I had no success stories. I had no proof, no clout, no, no reputation in the education space at all. Nothing that would, nothing that would make a sane individual be like, "Yep, this is a safe investment for me." I can laugh about that because Laura knows that I love her level of crazy, but Laura decided to take a gamble on me, and she was literally simply investing in an idea that was sitting inside of my head.
So she decided to throw one last Hail Mary, not because she wasn't scared, but because she realized that she had two choices. She could let fear convince her to quit, or she could let the fear drive her because she had nothing left to lose really. And what happened still blows my mind because in 2025, after going through the mastermind, Laura made more money in just [00:04:00] two months than she had made in the previous two years combined.
The first two months of the mastermind outperformed two entire years, and that is absolutely wild. So this episode is not about celebrating me. It's not about pitching the mastermind because you guys know the doors don't open for that again until next March. But and honestly, it's not even really about celebrating Laura.
Sorry, Laura. It's about understanding the moment where someone decides to stop waiting to feel ready and kinda hits the mute button on that fear. So let's get into it. Laura Stansbury.
Laura Stansberry: Hello.
Jodi Hendricks: Welcome to the Posers podcast.
Laura Stansberry: Thank you.
Jodi Hendricks: I'm, like, incredibly thrilled to have you here. Your photo shoot yesterday was Uh, completely different than the photo shoot that we did the very first time Yes So you've flown to Las Vegas two times to do headshots with me, kind of headshot and [00:05:00] branding a little bit.
And the first time you came in, I think both of us were a little bit nervous. Mm-hmm. Both of us were a little... Because I get nervous- Yeah ... whenever I have to photograph other photographers. I've said it before that like it's the biggest compliment to photograph other photographers- Mm-hmm ... but you know the bar is so crazy high.
So like the idea of creating in a new way, creating in a really high caliber way, like that makes me nervous. And then you coming in, we had only met on the mastermind. We had only- Right ... sort of lived in like cyber space together. And so you coming in, meeting me, being in the studio, there was so much fun and so much laughter, but also a little bit of like tension too.
Mm-hmm. And yesterday there was none of that. There was
Laura Stansberry: no tension.
Jodi Hendricks: How many times did we cry before the photo shoot? I mean, a couple- How many times- Just gonna say twice. Everybody's gonna be like, "What do you mean? Why did she make you cry?" No, like Laura came in, we have a pretty close relationship now.
Mm-hmm. And so we sat at my table, we talked for a little while. I had just gotten off of a meeting with my team, and I was like, [00:06:00] "I don't know what direction I'm going with this and this and this." I didn't necessarily break down into tears over it, but I was in like a, a head space. And then we started talking about like some personal stuff with you too.
Yeah. And then got into that histories, and I was like, "
Laura Stansberry: No, no, no. Don't, don't ruin makeup. Don't, like
Jodi Hendricks: we, we got a
Laura Stansberry: photo shoot to do." I showed up with hair and makeup, we couldn't ruin it.
Jodi Hendricks: Yeah. We could not ruin it. But so then we got into shooting, and you were so much more relaxed. Mm-hmm. And I was more relaxed, and we probably did half of the amount of photos, like the actual like- Oh
length of the photo shoot- For sure ... because we probably did half of the outfits- Mm-hmm ... and all that. But I think we probably have better photos. Mm-hmm. Just because, and not to say better because your first set was so incredibly gorgeous, but the set we did yesterday, I'm just like obsessed
Laura Stansberry: with. We're dying over.
Jodi Hendricks: Little bit, right? Little bit. Also, if you guys hear any sort of like glasses like that being put down or bottles clinking, you know we're drinking.
Laura Stansberry: Yes. There is always VOOV.
Jodi Hendricks: There's always VOOV, [00:07:00] right? Okay. So here's this mistake that I make whenever somebody comes on the podcast, I sort of jump in at the spot where I feel as though everybody knows the person- Mm-hmm
to the same caliber that I know them- Sure ... or that they know their backstory, and that I just jump in and say, "Okay, what do you think about this? What do you think about that?" So I'm gonna like- Make myself take a few steps back Mm-hmm And I wanna start at the beginning. So I want you to just kind of like tell everybody who you are- Sure
what you do, and how long you've been building this business. Do not talk about how many other businesses you wanna build- ... or how many businesses go- Right ... through your brain because
Laura Stansberry: I mean, we'll be here all day.
Jodi Hendricks: We'll be here all
Laura Stansberry: day ... and I will keep it short. She was born in 1976- Yeah ... blah,
Jodi Hendricks: blah, blah.
Just Laura has the brain just like mine to where it's like a squirrel. It's like- Okay ... sees a business opportunity in every corner, and then wants to chase it, and has to like really reel things in. So that's what I mean by that. Yeah. But tell everyone who you are, what you do, and how long you've been- Yes
building the photography business.
Laura Stansberry: Yes. So I'm Laura Stanfilry, and I s- [00:08:00] officially started my photography business at the end of 2019.
Jodi Hendricks: Okay.
Laura Stansberry: Yeah.
Jodi Hendricks: Okay.
Laura Stansberry: So,
Jodi Hendricks: Okay, one year before COVID, that is h-
Laura Stansberry: Not even one year before COVID ...
Jodi Hendricks: that is horrifying ...
Laura Stansberry: six months of what is six M- to March, October to March.
Jodi Hendricks: Okay, horrifying.
Laura Stansberry: Yeah. And really it started, I'd always loved photography. I always had taken pictures. I enjoyed it. It was something I was good at, even just like point and shoot, you know, take the photo. I, I went on a trip to the Grand Canyon, and I thought, "Gosh, if I'm going on this cool trip, I should probably get a camera."
Jodi Hendricks: Okay.
Laura Stansberry: So my husband bought me a camera, actually shipped it to me while I was on my trip And when I got home, I really thought, "It seems like such a waste to just stick this in a closet and pull it out occasionally." So I-
Jodi Hendricks: How many... Can I ask how old you were?
Laura Stansberry: I was 41.
Jodi Hendricks: Do, do you wanna know why I love, I love this so much?
Mm-hmm. Is 'cause you see things on the internet that it's oh, Vera Wang started designing [00:09:00] at whatever age- Mm-hmm ... and things like that, and it's like there's something, and I think, I think about this a lot too because of the dreams that I'm chasing. I always have to say to myself "You're not behind."
Mm-mm. Right? That women really come into some sort of, I don't even wanna say come into their own because it's not as if I haven't ever, always been myself and you might feel the same way, but we really come into something-
Laura Stansberry: Mm-hmm ...
Jodi Hendricks: in our 40s.
Laura Stansberry: Yeah.
Jodi Hendricks: Even late 30s. You really start to lock in-
Laura Stansberry: Mm-hmm
Jodi Hendricks: a little bit more and you can really sort of, sift through the shit.
Laura Stansberry: Yeah. Right? You're very much like-
Jodi Hendricks: You can push,
Laura Stansberry: you can push it aside ... I don't give a shit.
Jodi Hendricks: I don't give, yeah, I don't give a fuck. Right. I wanna do what I wanna do.
Laura Stansberry: Yeah.
Jodi Hendricks: And it's amplified for some reason- Mm-hmm ... in those later years.
Yeah. So okay. I just- Yeah ... I wanted to know how old you were and 'cause you also, you had a whole entire life before that-
Laura Stansberry: I had a whole entire- ...
Jodi Hendricks: and career life ...
Laura Stansberry: very long, very successful career in human resources.
Jodi Hendricks: For [00:10:00] Nordstrom,
Laura Stansberry: right? For Nordstrom.
Jodi Hendricks: Yeah. Yeah. So it's not as if you were just out meandering- Wandering around
wandering around- Yeah ... the world getting cameras sent to you- Right ... at the Grand Canyon. Yeah. It was like, no, you were very successful. You had a life. Yeah.
Laura Stansberry: You
Jodi Hendricks: had everything going for you in that sort of sense, and then there was just this bug that kinda bit you?
Laura Stansberry: Yeah. I had left my career and I had done other things in that time from leaving my career to picking up the camera officially.
I had started my own recruiting business. I was working as an HR consultant. You know, I was still kind of in that HR world, and then this happened and I thought, "Well, this, again, seems like such a waste." So I started looking online and I found some photographers that I resonated with and thought, "Well, this is, this is where I'm gonna start."
I started taking some online courses. I didn't know any... Don't talk to me about the triangle. I don't even know if I know what that means today. Sorry to tell you. I mean, I, I do, but, like- Yeah,
Jodi Hendricks: you do ...
Laura Stansberry: vibes
Jodi Hendricks: people. You just don't know it in, in the triangle vibe.
Laura Stansberry: Right. Maybe. In the time was it cute and in focus?
Yes. Y- [00:11:00] Done.
Jodi Hendricks: You know what? I feel like that's still my business model. Is it cute? Is it in focus? Cool. Sell it.
Laura Stansberry: Amazing. And if it's not, it's artsy. I mean, you know, whatever.
Jodi Hendricks: If you're doing any more than that, you're making it harder than it really is.
Laura Stansberry: Right. Right.
Jodi Hendricks: Really.
Laura Stansberry: Right?
Jodi Hendricks: Yeah. Okay.
Laura Stansberry: Yeah So, that's where I started.
I started with school photography, and then in the fall and kind of early winter of-
Jodi Hendricks: Okay. Hold on. Pause.
Laura Stansberry: Yeah
Jodi Hendricks: This is gonna be the longest podcast episode- I know ... because I can't even get through a sentence without being like- Right ... "Hold on. Tell me more about that." What made you think to go into school photography?
What kind of torture were you wanting to inflict
Laura Stansberry: on yourself? Okay. I love kids.
Jodi Hendricks: Okay.
Laura Stansberry: At one point in my life, long time ago, I really thought I would be a kindergarten teacher.
Jodi Hendricks: Oh, okay. A
Laura Stansberry: lo- or like twen- early 20s. I was like- I
Jodi Hendricks: love my kids.
Laura Stansberry: Yeah. Yeah. And I mean, well, that's a whole nother podcast.
We'll save that. That's a whole
Jodi Hendricks: nother podcast. Okay.
Laura Stansberry: But no, I really, I loved kids. I felt very comfortable with kids. So I thought, well, [00:12:00] this feels
Jodi Hendricks: It also felt safe
Laura Stansberry: in the sense of it was a set day, a set environment. We knew the structure. It was sort of like, I don't wanna think too deeply of it as home of the skills.
How did you,
Jodi Hendricks: how did you get these schools? How did you get these clients?
Laura Stansberry: I listened to a little motivational clip one day that I still have saved on my phone.
Jodi Hendricks: By who, do you remember?
Laura Stansberry: It's just a random YouTube compilation of things.
Jodi Hendricks: Okay.
Laura Stansberry: And periodically, I've listened to this for years, and it always felt very motivating and inspiring.
I can share it. We can put it in the notes. But I loved it, and there is a point in that clip that talks about if you don't do it today, you could be pushing yourself back six months or two years if you don't just take action.
Jodi Hendricks: The cost of inaction.
Laura Stansberry: Yes.
Jodi Hendricks: Yeah.
Laura Stansberry: So [00:13:00] I was like, "Fuck it," and I sat down and I pulled up Google Maps and I emailed- 50 preschools in my area
Jodi Hendricks: God, I love you.
God, I love you. Okay, keep going. Sorry.
Laura Stansberry: I emailed 50 preschools in my area and just said, "Hi, I'm Lara Stansberry. I am launching a photography business, and I don't have a portfolio. I don't really have anything but these four pictures of my nephews that I can show you that I have taken. But here's what I'm offering."
Jodi Hendricks: Lara. Welcome to the Closers Podcast. this is what I was saying. Uh, we're gonna have to like add in the clip of what we were talking about prior to like actually hitting record on this. This is what I'm saying, is that you have this ability, you have this superpower that is actually in marketing- Mm-hmm
that like kind of got unleashed- Mm-hmm ... whenever you came into the mastermind. The [00:14:00] minute that I could just sort of like take you by the shoulders and turn you in a direction and say, "Go"-
Laura Stansberry: Mm-hmm ...
Jodi Hendricks: you will plow through walls.
Laura Stansberry: Mm-hmm.
Jodi Hendricks: You will plow through literal brick walls- Mm-hmm ... to make your business go forward.
And I talk about this all the time, is just like you have to be willing to go fucking feral.
Laura Stansberry: Mm-hmm.
Jodi Hendricks: You have to be willing to be cringey. You have to be willing to just go and get a lot of nos.
Laura Stansberry: Mm-hmm.
Jodi Hendricks: Knowing that statistics are in your corner, that at some point you're going to get a yes. You have to do so much volume-
Laura Stansberry: Yeah
Jodi Hendricks: that it is unreasonable for you to fail.
Laura Stansberry: Yeah.
Jodi Hendricks: Right? Granted, that's in the beginning- Yeah ... of your business. It's not as if I'm out here doing that now. Right. It's not as if you're out here... Well, you kind of are still. You, woman-
Laura Stansberry: Sometimes ...
Jodi Hendricks: you are a superhuman. So like just that in and of itself is a whole entire podcast episode, of just listening to this motivational, like YouTube that you were just talking about.
Laura Stansberry: Mm-hmm.
Jodi Hendricks: Hearing the actual message and then [00:15:00] taking action on it.
Laura Stansberry: Mm-hmm.
Jodi Hendricks: And then being so brazen to email 50 preschools and be like, "What's the worst they could say, no?"
Laura Stansberry: No, or not reply.
Jodi Hendricks: Yeah.
Laura Stansberry: And-
Jodi Hendricks: That's the thing is- Yeah ... people don't do that.
Laura Stansberry: Right.
Jodi Hendricks: They won't do that because of that fear-
Laura Stansberry: Yeah ...
Jodi Hendricks: which is what this whole entire episode's about.
Yeah. Okay. Granted, the e- episode is no longer about Laura's fear. It's how Laura
Laura Stansberry: literally has no fear,
Jodi Hendricks: okay?
Laura Stansberry: Laura has a lot of fear, but-
Jodi Hendricks: Okay, yeah ...
Laura Stansberry: there, when I decide I'm going to do something, I really am just gonna like- Go ... go. So I did.
Immediately I emailed those 50 schools. I had kept track of all the information.
I made a list of everybody I contacted, all the school names, who I thought would be the best possible contact, the contact information, all of that, you know. So then, really, within 24 to 48 hours, I had five replies of people saying, "I'd like to know more."
Jodi Hendricks: I love that.
Laura Stansberry: So I set up appointments, and I took my little black folder [00:16:00] with my little price sheet and my sample photos, and went in for my little meetings and said-
Jodi Hendricks: Okay, I want you to stop using the word little
Laura Stansberry: stop little, and I went in for my meetings.
Jodi Hendricks: Thank you. She, yes. Because you
Laura Stansberry: were
Jodi Hendricks: starting a business, and you were starting it in the most incredible and no fear, big balls- Yes ... kind of
Laura Stansberry: way. It was very ballsy. Yeah. So
Jodi Hendricks: I'm
Laura Stansberry: not so-
Jodi Hendricks: Let's, let's take- ... depreciate it ... let's take away that little.
Laura Stansberry: Let's take away the little.
I went in for these meetings, and I had put together a price sheet, some sample photos, had it in a folder. I had written them a letter if they needed to share it with anybody else, like what everything looked like, what this process looked like, and off I went. And from that, I booked- Three out of those five schools for the following spring
Jodi Hendricks: Okay, closing rate?
Laura Stansberry: Yeah.
Jodi Hendricks: Okay, conversion rate? Yes. Look at you.
Laura Stansberry: One of them had told me "We're interested, but we've been working with the same person for years. We're committed to them through at least the end [00:17:00] of next year." I'm like, "Great. Love to contact you end of next year."
Jodi Hendricks: Yeah.
Laura Stansberry: One of them was a homeschool group a homeschool organization.
And they were interested, but they were interested, again, same thing spring.
Jodi Hendricks: Mm-hmm.
Laura Stansberry: So it was like fabulous. So I started with that. And then we are now to October of 2019, and the majority of this is- Yeah ... planned for spring of 2020. Dun, dun,
Jodi Hendricks: dun. Dun, dun, dun. Oh, God.
Laura Stansberry: Fuck. All of
Jodi Hendricks: that work literally just down the toilet.
Laura Stansberry: Yeah. And in the meantime of this, I had been doing model calls. I had been ac- I really wanted, at that time, pre-COVID we didn't even know at this point what COVID was. We had not heard that word.
Jodi Hendricks: Yeah.
Laura Stansberry: Nothing.
Jodi Hendricks: Well, and also it was called coronavirus.
Laura Stansberry: Coronavirus. Yeah. Yes. We didn't, we didn't know anything about it.
So I really was thinking I wanted to be in that school photography space at certain points of the years, uh, year, and then also [00:18:00] newborn and maternity photography. I did not have a studio. I wanted to serve people in their homes.
Jodi Hendricks: Okay.
Laura Stansberry: So I thought, well, that would be great for newborn photography because, you know, I don't need a studio if we're in their home.
And then as far as maternity, I'm sure I was thinking outside or we'd also do it in their home or whatever.
Jodi Hendricks: Yeah, yeah.
Laura Stansberry: And then COVID happened.
Jodi Hendricks: Mm.
Laura Stansberry: And I still remember the very last model call I did. It was l- I think the third week of February 2020.
Jodi Hendricks: Okay.
Laura Stansberry: Right before shutdown. And I remember thinking, "I don't know what to do with this."
And it did not feel good to my soul to say to new moms, "Hey, we can still do this."
Jodi Hendricks: Yeah, yeah.
Laura Stansberry: I- this is a safe way to take photos of your baby.
Jodi Hendricks: Yeah.
Laura Stansberry: We didn't know that at the time.
Jodi Hendricks: "Oh, I could just wear a mask." Yeah. "Oh, I could just stay six feet away."
Laura Stansberry: Right. "
Jodi Hendricks: Oh, I could..." Yeah.
Laura Stansberry: Keep in mind the wild, wild west that PPE was at the time.
Jodi Hendricks: [00:19:00] Yeah.
Laura Stansberry: I have a picture of myself with a paper towel and- Dog bags.
Jodi Hendricks: Yeah.
Laura Stansberry: Yes, a mask.
Jodi Hendricks: Wait, remember the, the photos that were coming out on the internet- Yes ... of people wearing like a thong?
Laura Stansberry: Like a thong. I mean, seriously, I went... That you had to wear a mask. And w- I have a picture of myself in my car "This is doing nothing, but okay, it's some sort of face covering."
Jodi Hendricks: Yeah.
Laura Stansberry: So anyway, that didn't resonate with my soul to tell new moms that this was a safe way to photograph their babies.
Jodi Hendricks: Yeah.
Laura Stansberry: So I was like, "I guess we're just not-"
Jodi Hendricks: Yeah ...
Laura Stansberry: for right now.
Jodi Hendricks: Yeah. I was a wedding photographer at the time- Mm-hmm ... so it was like I didn't even have to make those decisions. It was just like, "Oh, so this wedding's just not-"
Laura Stansberry: Mm-hmm
Jodi Hendricks: gonna happen.
Laura Stansberry: Yeah.
Jodi Hendricks: Okay.
Laura Stansberry: So I'm sure, I, I don't, honestly, I don't really think I did anything during that time. Uh, I had another job you know, so I was just sort of like, "We'll just wait and see."
Jodi Hendricks: Mm-hmm.
Laura Stansberry: And then that next fall rolled around.
Jodi Hendricks: Okay. The
Laura Stansberry: fall of 2020. 2021. Well, really, it would've been-
Jodi Hendricks: Of 2020
Laura Stansberry: fall of 2020, so like September, October of 2020. We knew a [00:20:00] little bit more.
Jodi Hendricks: Yeah.
Laura Stansberry: School was back in session. The preschools were back. I just had to wear a mask-
Jodi Hendricks: Yeah ...
Laura Stansberry: during the photo sessions. I
Jodi Hendricks: think I did, I think I did family photos that fall too.
Laura Stansberry: Yeah.
Jodi Hendricks: Yeah.
Laura Stansberry: So that's, and that's how we, we started. And that first school, I will, they did their photos outside.
They always had. They were located on a park.
Jodi Hendricks: Uh-huh.
Laura Stansberry: So we did them outside, but I also wanted to have a very boutique photo experience, so I actually did photos outside, and then I would flip them around, and I had a backdrop, black drop, and a white backdrop.
Jodi Hendricks: Yeah.
Laura Stansberry: So I took three sets of photos for these kids.
Jodi Hendricks: Right.
Laura Stansberry: And on each backdrop, and then I had-
Jodi Hendricks: And then in nature. Yeah.
Laura Stansberry: And then in nature. Yeah, so they had three complete sets. I would take five or six photos on each one, and then they had their typical school photo options of-
Jodi Hendricks: Yeah ...
Laura Stansberry: print packages, digital packages, the whole thing, and I made a ton of money that fall.
Jodi Hendricks: Yeah.
Laura Stansberry: Because it was so- Wait,
Jodi Hendricks: did you also then price it the way that- Mm-hmm ... you should, like that [00:21:00] parents then came in, they had a gallery, they had whatever, and they had to purchase each one of the different amount?
Laura Stansberry: They had to purchase what I had, like an ins- I think I had 10 packages that they could choose
Jodi Hendricks: from.
Okay, so like we're never gonna get through this podcast. No. What were you studying, what were you doing or was it just common sense that made you feel like, "I'm gonna price it this way so that I can make the most of my money," versus charging the school a set amount?
Laura Stansberry: Well, with school photography, that's very rarely how it works.
Jodi Hendricks: Oh, okay. It is-
Laura Stansberry: So that's the
Jodi Hendricks: standard in school ...
Laura Stansberry: you are, like, winging on a hope and a prayer that these parents buy your photos because you're, the school- So the school
Jodi Hendricks: doesn't pay you ...
Laura Stansberry: school doesn't pay you.
Jodi Hendricks: Oh, okay.
Laura Stansberry: They don't, I mean, you could set it up where parents pre-pay, but I did not.
Jodi Hendricks: Yeah.
Laura Stansberry: Yeah.
So I, I did not. So I just came up with what did I think based on- I had, I had taken a school photography course- Okay ... an online course. Right. So there was some information in there. I [00:22:00] probably did a little Google research of like what is lifetime, Life Touch photo charging- Yeah ... or something. Yeah.
There was a place out in Chicago that was really cool, like boutique photography. So I'm sure I kind of compiled all that and felt "Okay, this-
Jodi Hendricks: Okay, this feels great. "...
Laura Stansberry: this seems great."
Jodi Hendricks: Yeah.
Laura Stansberry: This feels great And there was like high, medium, low. You could get a 5x7 for $10- Yeah ... if you, they really wanted to, and that was-
Jodi Hendricks: Yeah
Laura Stansberry: that was that. But I made a bunch of money. A lot. I made like $10,000 that fall.
Jodi Hendricks: Nice.
Laura Stansberry: And figure at the time-
Jodi Hendricks: You were, you knew nothing.
Laura Stansberry: I knew nothing.
Jodi Hendricks: Yeah. I
Laura Stansberry: knew nothing about- Had nothing
Jodi Hendricks: to compare it to ...
Laura Stansberry: strategy or marketing- Yeah ... or anything. I, you know, put together what now I would think of as a a sales pros- like, a funnel in for the parents.
Yeah. Because I did a lot of prep work with the parents. This is probably different than what you've experienced before. This is how it works.
Jodi Hendricks: How did you do that prep work? How did you... Just by email?
Laura Stansberry: Mm-hmm.
Jodi Hendricks: Okay.
Laura Stansberry: I would email the families, yep, so they, they got all my prep prior, [00:23:00] and then they, once galleries launched, 'cause this was, again, school photos are gonna be different than what we do, what I do today.
Jodi Hendricks: Yeah.
Laura Stansberry: But they would get their galleries. They would be
Jodi Hendricks: open for- But kinda not ... a time.
Laura Stansberry: Yeah.
Jodi Hendricks: But kinda not. If you're running an IPS program- Mm-hmm ... like which I know you are now-
Laura Stansberry: Yeah ...
Jodi Hendricks: then it's kinda not. It's still the same idea that you're gonna come out, your kids are gonna do these photos with me- Mm-hmm
at your school. You're gonna choose your favorites, you're gonna buy your favorites, and that's it. Yeah. Same it's-
Laura Stansberry: And- ...
Jodi Hendricks: maybe a few more bells and whistles over on the family side, but same process.
Laura Stansberry: And c- the communication aspect of it was really important to me because I'm like, "These are busy school age families."
Jodi Hendricks: Yeah.
Laura Stansberry: They are gonna need a million reminders-
Jodi Hendricks: Yep ...
Laura Stansberry: because I also can be a little militant- Well,
Jodi Hendricks: how- ...
Laura Stansberry: on when we're done, we're done.
Jodi Hendricks: This i- Have you ever seen my stories? The minute a school, before a school year ever even starts, fucking Justin's- Yes. ... in my email. I've got three boys, right? So, like- Right
Justin's in my email emailing me about every single [00:24:00] one of my kids and which ones are... I'll have 42 emails from Justin- Mm-hmm ... on the first day of school.
Laura Stansberry: Yeah. And I'm like, "These people don't play." No. No. And, and honestly, it feels annoying. I'm being annoying. But I will tell you the number one piece of feedback that I would get is, "Thank you so much for all- For-
of this communication" ... for
Jodi Hendricks: standing in my inbox.
Laura Stansberry: Yeah.
Jodi Hendricks: Yeah.
Laura Stansberry: Because we were, I was sending everything from here's how it works to here's how you should dress your child for school photos because we're doing the park, we're doing the back- black backdrop, we're doing the white backdrop. Please don't send them in a-
Jodi Hendricks: In a crazy colorful-
Laura Stansberry: Yeah, in a-
Whatever
Jodi Hendricks: freaking He-Man T-shirt.
Laura Stansberry: Yes, exactly. Which
Jodi Hendricks: nobody who's younger than us knows who He-Man is.
Laura Stansberry: No, I was thinking what's the one with the puppies? She's like, "Superman." You know. Or yeah, Paw Patrol. Like Bluey or whatever. Paw Patrol, don't send them in that. You're not gonna love it.
Jodi Hendricks: Yeah.
Laura Stansberry: So they w- they appreciated that [00:25:00] level of communication around it.
And to, you have to keep in mind, I did, I think that fall, I'm trying to think of all the timing, I did two schools okay, I'm gonna jump ahead.
Yeah.
Jodi Hendricks: I know we're like mid-thought-
Laura Stansberry: Yeah ...
Jodi Hendricks: on this, but what I'm loving so much about just what we're talking about isn't so much the actual timeline of this- Mm-hmm
but like, the methodology-
Laura Stansberry: Yeah ...
Jodi Hendricks: that you really understood the methodology- Mm-hmm ... of starting this business. So, in between that run that you had at school photos to the time that we were now on this intro just talking about 2024, you were negative $30,000 in your business. Mm-hmm. What happened?
What collapsed?
Laura Stansberry: So, one, it's... I was only putting the marketing behind my business at one time of the year. When I decided- Oh ... I was, I had such a good run with school photos, we [00:26:00] really got to a point where that sort of ran on autopilot-
Jodi Hendricks: Mm-hmm ...
Laura Stansberry: for a long time. Yeah. Now, things changed with that over the years, and I, I...
The first few years I made incredible money Then I don't know it was, if it was me, if it was them, if they were bored of the photos, if it aged out. Who knows? I- I
Jodi Hendricks: remember- I can't
Laura Stansberry: even
Jodi Hendricks: speculate ... I remember be- I remember being inside of that first round of the beta, and you say- you were having this really hard time with the school.
Mm-hmm. And like for some reason, all of the sudden- Mm-hmm ... nobody was buying.
Laura Stansberry: And literally nobody was. And we were-
Jodi Hendricks: not buying ... we were, like, trying to figure it out. Yeah. And it was like, not just "Oh, I'm making 5,000 at a school." It was the difference of like-
Laura Stansberry: I'm making
Jodi Hendricks: $600 ... normally you'd
Laura Stansberry: make...
Jodi Hendricks: Yeah, normally you'd make 15,000 and now you're making $600. Yeah. What happened? Yeah. Which I know we worked through stuff like that. But so if you were using the same methodology of sort of jumping in, balls to the wall- Mm-hmm ... like building the school business side of it- Mm-hmm ... why did you [00:27:00] ever think that you should approach families or anything else, newborns, maternity- Mm-hmm
anything else you were doing in your business, why did you think that you should approach it any other sort of way?
Laura Stansberry: I don't, honestly, my honest answer is I really don't have a great answer. Yeah. I don't know if I got, like, all up in my own feels about it-
Jodi Hendricks: Yeah ...
Laura Stansberry: that I was, like, a little afraid of it.
I also would dump really my entire year into Santa.
Jodi Hendricks: Yeah.
Laura Stansberry: And I became-
Jodi Hendricks: You became the Santa girl ...
Laura Stansberry: the Santa girl, because I, my whole year was structured around Santa.
Jodi Hendricks: So then also what you said a second ago-
Laura Stansberry: Mm-hmm ...
Jodi Hendricks: you said, "I only marketed one time during the year." Mm-hmm. So really it was like you were coming out of the woodworks only whenever you had something to sell-
Laura Stansberry: Mm-hmm
Jodi Hendricks: to somebody. So you weren't doing any of the sort of legwork of marketing your business, staying on top of that [00:28:00] piece- Mm-hmm ... like being in your community, creating collaborations- Right ... running your social media. You weren't doing all of the pieces- Mm-hmm ... that actually keep a business running-
Laura Stansberry: Yeah
Jodi Hendricks: year-round. Right. You were just like, "Da, da, da. Okay."
Laura Stansberry: Here I am for Santa time.
Jodi Hendricks: Here I am 'cause it's time, it's Santa time.
Laura Stansberry: Yep.
Jodi Hendricks: Okay.
Laura Stansberry: Yeah.
Jodi Hendricks: Got it.
Laura Stansberry: Be on stories, make a reel? Who is she? Never. Never. It never, and shocker, that doesn't work. Um, So yeah, that's really, I mean- Oh, yeah. Hold on,
shocker is you were- Shocker ... you were thinking in your head that doesn't work
not being visible in any
Jodi Hendricks: way, shape,
Laura Stansberry: or form- Oh, yeah ... does not work.
Jodi Hendricks: Yeah.
Laura Stansberry: Yeah.
Jodi Hendricks: There's a, there's this small thing in business called visibility- Mm-hmm ...
Laura Stansberry: that,
Jodi Hendricks: like- Mm-hmm ...
Laura Stansberry: it's kind of important. Yeah,
Jodi Hendricks: yeah. You know?
Laura Stansberry: Yeah.
Jodi Hendricks: I was actually watching the World Cup the other day. I was being forced to watch the World Cup.
You know, I'm not a sports- Mm-hmm ... like this is not a sports podcast. Yeah. I do not watch the sports, but we, I was watching some [00:29:00] other sort of trash on TV on Sunday. I think it was the Ultimatum-
Laura Stansberry: Mm-hmm ...
Jodi Hendricks: on Netflix. You know, real great- ... quality TV. Good
Laura Stansberry: stuff.
Jodi Hendricks: Yeah. And Brian was like, "Hey, there's this thing called the World Cup-
that's going on that like the whole entire world is watching-
Laura Stansberry: The World Cup ...
Jodi Hendricks: right now, right? Do you think that maybe you'd like to participate in that?" I was like, "No." Mm-mm. No, but I allowed it still- Yeah ... 'cause I was kind of bored. And so he switched over, and I'm like watching the marketing, like- Mm-hmm
what's wrong with me that I don't give two shits about whatever ball- Yeah ... they're kicking around. And I'm watching the marketing, and I see this like scroll on the freaking, uh, what's the fence that goes around-
Laura Stansberry: Oh, yeah ... the perimeter? Like the ticker
Jodi Hendricks: tape thing. Yeah, the, yeah. Yeah. I'm watching that, and like of course McDonald's scrolls.
Mm-hmm. Right? And I'm just like, God, if anybody in the world has visibility on lock-
Laura Stansberry: Mm-hmm ...
Jodi Hendricks: it is McDonald's. Yes. Because also, a week ago we were in Italy and had been eating nothing but Italian, and it was the [00:30:00] day that we had to transfer from our Airbnb to the airport to get on a plane- Mm-hmm ... to go to Rome.
And so we're driving down the road, and literally my nephew was like, "There's the golden arches." And like the vis- so I'm getting off on this little tangent that is not necessary. Everybody knows how powerful McDonald's is. Mm-hmm. But yes, visibility- Mm-hmm ... if you don't actually make yourself visible- Mm-hmm
to the people who would book you is-
Laura Stansberry: Yeah ...
Jodi Hendricks: a little bit important.
Laura Stansberry: Yeah. No, and then, and I see it now because behind the scenes it's not like I was just sitting there being like- I don't know, man. I don't know why nobody's booking me, because I was doing all of the things.
Jodi Hendricks: What do you mean-
Laura Stansberry: I was
Jodi Hendricks: doing- ... by all of the things?
Laura Stansberry: I was doing none of the things that actually were gonna grow the business, but I was constantly working on my website. Oh. I was-
Jodi Hendricks: You were playing with the pretty ...
Laura Stansberry: buying $10,000 of [00:31:00] wardrobe for my client closet. I was always-
Jodi Hendricks: Wait, hold up ... pur- Whoop.
Laura Stansberry: Whoop. Pause. Pause.
Jodi Hendricks: $10,000 for a client wardrobe for clients that you didn't have.
For clients...
Laura Stansberry: But if I
Jodi Hendricks: had- Yes ...
Laura Stansberry: if you build it, they will come. Oh,
Jodi Hendricks: okay. It- Okay.
Laura Stansberry: They... I don't know how they were gonna possibly know about it, because as we have discussed, I was not actually on those-
Jodi Hendricks: So we're gonna- ...
Laura Stansberry: visibility things ...
Jodi Hendricks: go about-
Laura Stansberry: But if you build it, they will come.
Jodi Hendricks: So in 1990- I'm not
Laura Stansberry: saying this is right
Jodi Hendricks: a 1990s Kevin Costner movie was your business plan.
Laura Stansberry: Yes. Yes. It might as well been out of Field. Look,
Jodi Hendricks: I am not laughing to shame. I am- No. No ...
Laura Stansberry: I'm
Jodi Hendricks: laughing at the idea that it's a 1990s- Yes.
Laura Stansberry: Yes ...
Jodi Hendricks: Kevin Costner
Laura Stansberry: movie- No,
Jodi Hendricks: so- ... that was driving the bus ...
Laura Stansberry: I was very deep into playing with the pretty of it
Jodi Hendricks: all. I get...
I, I mean, I understand how you can slide into that, because there is the idea of "If you build it, [00:32:00] they will come"- Mm-hmm ... which literally, like really sits in the house of manifestation-
Laura Stansberry: Mm-hmm ...
Jodi Hendricks: and vision board- Mm-hmm ... and like all of that, and we just talked about it on the last podcast-
Laura Stansberry: Right ...
Jodi Hendricks: how those things are really great, and they can be tools, but they can also backfire.
Yeah. They can also like sabotage you, because you can do all of that, and you can think that you're doing the right things. You can think you're tinkering with the right things- Mm-hmm ... and then say, "Why isn't the business happening?"
Laura Stansberry: Yeah. I mean, I was hiring copywriters. I was doing like website refreshes. I was doing Google analytic ad purchasing, like all of the things, and none of it was working.
Yeah. And the only thing that was working is that I would do this hard push starting in like May for my Santa sessions in- You
Jodi Hendricks: did a launch.
Laura Stansberry: Yeah, I did a launch. Okay.
Jodi Hendricks: So you have-
Laura Stansberry: Well, not knowing what a launch... I mean,
Jodi Hendricks: I
Laura Stansberry: knew what a launch was, but like it was my own creative launch. That [00:33:00] was the only thing that was working.
But you can't sustain-
Jodi Hendricks: Okay. Hold up. Pause.
Laura Stansberry: Yeah.
Jodi Hendricks: That was-
Laura Stansberry: That was the only- Launch was the only thing that was working ... was
Jodi Hendricks: thing that was working. Just, yeah, just launch. Little subliminal messaging- Right,
Laura Stansberry: right, right ... in there
Jodi Hendricks: of "Oh, okay." Right. "The poster system worked. Okay."
Laura Stansberry: But you cannot sustain a business that is bleeding cash-
Jodi Hendricks: Mm-hmm
Laura Stansberry: 10 months out of the year.
Jodi Hendricks: You could break even. Mm-mm. Maybe. Mm-mm. If your, if your Santa was fire.
Laura Stansberry: Spoiler alert- ... she was not even breaking even those years. Well,
Jodi Hendricks: I say that because-
Laura Stansberry: Yeah ...
Jodi Hendricks: I know people who... i'm not a Santa girl.
Laura Stansberry: Yeah.
Jodi Hendricks: But I know people who can run a Santa.
Laura Stansberry: Yeah.
Jodi Hendricks: I know- I know the Santas are out there Santa-ing.
Here's
Laura Stansberry: the thing. I was selling it out. I was increasing my prices, like, and I was still selling it out.
Jodi Hendricks: Yeah.
Laura Stansberry: But it wasn't enough to sustain- And- ... everything else ...
Jodi Hendricks: and also the burnout.
Laura Stansberry: And the burnout. And because that particular [00:34:00] year, I didn't even decorate my own house for Christmas because I was like, "I am so-"
Jodi Hendricks: Yeah,
Laura Stansberry: that, what a-
"over
Jodi Hendricks: this." '
Laura Stansberry: Cause I had been talking about it, well, I had been talking about Santa behind the scenes since probably February.
Jodi Hendricks: I never even thought about that angle of it.
Laura Stansberry: And then I would start talking about it in May, and then I would launch it in June or July.
Jodi Hendricks: I never even thought about that element of it, of like- What a time to be busy
Laura Stansberry: Mm-hmm
Jodi Hendricks: Like, what a time that it takes away, and I'm not knocking the Santa thing because-
Laura Stansberry: No, sure
Jodi Hendricks: Obviously it is, it can be a cash cow.
Laura Stansberry: Mm-hmm.
Jodi Hendricks: what a time to be busy that you yourself are depleted so much that you can't enjoy Christmas- Yeah ... yourself.
Laura Stansberry: Yeah.
Jodi Hendricks: Right? That's-
Laura Stansberry: Totally ...
Jodi Hendricks: crazy.
Laura Stansberry: So anyway, all of that to say is like I was sometimes doing the things that would market and grow the business, but I was not doing them all the time, and I was not doing them in every aspect of my business that I wanted to grow.
You were [00:35:00]
Jodi Hendricks: just doing it with Santa. Was
Laura Stansberry: just... I couldn't sell a family photo session to, like- That's- ... give it away ...
Jodi Hendricks: that's so interesting to me- Yeah ... because you couldn't do it, and you had families coming into the studio.
Laura Stansberry: Mm-hmm.
Jodi Hendricks: You literally- I had- ... you had the clientele there ...
Laura Stansberry: hundreds of school photo people-
Jodi Hendricks: Yeah
Laura Stansberry: that I literally was like, I don't even know if they knew I did anything other than school photos.
Jodi Hendricks: Well, I was just about to say, do you wanna know why? But you just said it yourself.
Laura Stansberry: Yeah.
Jodi Hendricks: you painted yourself into a corner- Mm-hmm ... of only doing those things. Mm-hmm. Yeah. So they never even made the jump, the association- Yeah
of, oh, she can do other things. Yeah. You never showed them that.
Laura Stansberry: Yeah. And I
Jodi Hendricks: had- You never marketed that ...
Laura Stansberry: out of, I mean, we're talking over the years of doing school photos, I bet you I worked with 1,000 families. Wow. And I have, in my current day, families that I still work with that I met [00:36:00] through school photography, off the top of my head I can think of four.
Wow. and that is, I look at that and I'm like, "What the fuck were you thinking?"
Jodi Hendricks: A lesson in messaging.
Laura Stansberry: And I really, I feel like at the time think there was an element of me of I don't want to take advantage of this relationship that I have
Jodi Hendricks: Wow ...
Laura Stansberry: that I was like, is that crossing sort of like a- Let-
line. Hold
Jodi Hendricks: on. I feel let's, let's- Mm-hmm ... let's go into that self-sabotage.
Laura Stansberry: I know. Let's- I know ... '
Jodi Hendricks: cause the mindset of that is you don't wanna burden them-
Laura Stansberry: Mm-hmm ...
Jodi Hendricks: by asking for too much.
Laura Stansberry: Right.
Jodi Hendricks: They've already paid you money-
Laura Stansberry: Yes ...
Jodi Hendricks: for this service, and you only- Mm-hmm ... have access to them because of the school or because- Mm-hmm
of the Santa. So you almost felt like you didn't want to exploit them.
Laura Stansberry: Yes.
Jodi Hendricks: You didn't want to- Yes ... exploit their email address-
Laura Stansberry: [00:37:00] Right ...
Jodi Hendricks: by then offering them more.
Laura Stansberry: Right. And it never occurred to me that all of the same things that they liked about my
Jodi Hendricks: school photography- That's exactly what I
Laura Stansberry: was about to
Jodi Hendricks: say
Laura Stansberry: process, they probably would've also really- Really ... liked- ... about my family photo experience, because keep in mind, at the time, I'm spending $10,000 to build a client wardrobe. communication is very important to me, and understanding that process and making it easy for them. Yeah. But I was not letting the worlds collide.
E-
Jodi Hendricks: you just, the synapses weren't synapsing. No.
Laura Stansberry: They
Jodi Hendricks: literally- There, there wasn't a common thread that was getting pulled over saying hey, what I do in my school business, my Santa business, is the exact same thing that I should be doing over here- Yeah ... in this pool of bigger revenue.
Laura Stansberry: Mm-hmm.
Jodi Hendricks: Right?
Laura Stansberry: Yeah.
Jodi Hendricks: is that the number one thing? Now that you can look back on it, and again, hindsight is 20/20. Right. It's not as if you were trying. Right.
Laura Stansberry: So like- It's not like I'm [00:38:00] trying to sink this business into the ground.
Jodi Hendricks: Yeah. E- exactly Yeah. It's just that now you've learned everything that you've learned, and so now it looks so crystal clear.
But looking back on it, do you feel like that was the number one struggle in your business, or was it something that was a little bit more self-sabotaging? Was it that fear-based sort of thing- There's a h- ... that kept you smaller?
Laura Stansberry: There was 100% like a fear-based of a what if. I mean, I did feel like I had a moral code of, I will not spam these people, but I also feel like that was also a very safe place to be-
Jodi Hendricks: That's self-sabotage
Laura Stansberry: 'cause nobody can tell me no- Well, you can only- ... if I don't even ask ...
Jodi Hendricks: and you can only spam somebody if you're sending them information that's not useful to them.
Laura Stansberry: Right.
Jodi Hendricks: Right? If you're sending them like, you know, spammy sort of stuff- And
Laura Stansberry: they
Jodi Hendricks: can, you
Laura Stansberry: know, there is a big- ... but they already told you- ... glaring unsubscribe button on there.
Jodi Hendricks: Yeah. You know? They have the choice.
Laura Stansberry: Right. They have the choice. But I, yeah, I mean, there was [00:39:00] 100% like a, well, nobody is gonna pay me this money to take their family photos.
Jodi Hendricks: Wow.
Laura Stansberry: Mm-hmm.
Jodi Hendricks: Interesting, because- We know, looking at it through like a clear lens, we know that the family photos are what they love the most.
Laura Stansberry: Yes. They're paying- Right? ... crazy amounts of money-
Jodi Hendricks: For a school photo ... 'cause if I was
Laura Stansberry: FantaPhoto, that's the- All I'm getting in value ... upper edge of what school photography would cost
I was not
Jodi Hendricks: You weren't cheap ...
Laura Stansberry: cheap.
Jodi Hendricks: Yeah.
Laura Stansberry: You know, yeah, could you buy a 5x10 for $10? Sure.
Jodi Hendricks: But that's not cheap.
Laura Stansberry: But that's not cheap- No ... for a 5x10 when you can go to Walgreens- You're,
Jodi Hendricks: but also you're getting- ... and get it for 50
Laura Stansberry: cents ...
Jodi Hendricks: you're getting that at cost for $1 or so. Yeah, yeah. Right? So that's still not cheap.
Laura Stansberry: Totally. Still not cheap. But I, and it wasn't, yeah, I just was, like, afraid of the ask. And there towards the very end, I started offering- Whoa,
Jodi Hendricks: [00:40:00] whoa, whoa ... yeah ... whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. Okay.
Laura Stansberry: You
Jodi Hendricks: know,
Laura Stansberry: you love me so bad. I do. 'Cause- You're like, "Whoa, whoa" ...
Jodi Hendricks: yeah, hold on. Pause there, because you were never afraid of the ask when it was- Yeah,
Laura Stansberry: but now the ask felt personal.
I didn't, I, the, the ask felt like I know they already like me with the school photography. Maybe that's enough. Maybe they, what if they don't like what I do over here with the family photography?
Jodi Hendricks: Okay, there's so much self-sabotage happening.
Laura Stansberry: So much.
Jodi Hendricks: So much.
Laura Stansberry: So much.
Jodi Hendricks: Okay, this isn't a therapy session. We see it now.
Mm-hmm. We know that it's happening, and I think that the biggest thing that I love for, about this conversation-
Laura Stansberry: Mm-hmm ...
Jodi Hendricks: is that it might just trigger other people- Mm-hmm ... to think even if they don't have your same exact thought process- Mm-hmm ... I think they can see themselves-
Laura Stansberry: Mm-hmm ...
Jodi Hendricks: in your thought process.
That we can see Lara of 2019 [00:41:00] was- Yeah ... not afraid of the ask 'cause there was nothing to lose.
Laura Stansberry: Right. It was-
Jodi Hendricks: Right? The worst case that happened was that somebody said no.
Laura Stansberry: Mm-hmm.
Jodi Hendricks: But then all of a sudden, and I know for a fact that there's so much psychology here, which you know I'm fucking- Mm-hmm
gyrating-
Laura Stansberry: Yeah. ... on, okay?
Jodi Hendricks: But the fact that you tasted money-
Laura Stansberry: Mm-hmm ...
Jodi Hendricks: the fact that you tasted success- Mm-hmm ... you got a taste of, okay, hey, I could actually run this business.
Laura Stansberry: Right.
Jodi Hendricks: And right whenever it was about to get good-
Laura Stansberry: You're like, "Mm" ...
Jodi Hendricks: you bailed.
Laura Stansberry: Mm-hmm.
Jodi Hendricks: That's what happened.
Laura Stansberry: Mm-hmm.
Jodi Hendricks: It wasn't necessarily in your head you were justifying it as, "Oh I can't ask them for more.
I'm gonna exploit them for their email," or- Mm-hmm ... "They're not gonna pay me as much to do family as they would to do this," and all of these things. Mm-hmm. All these excuses that are going on in your head.
Laura Stansberry: Mm-hmm.
Jodi Hendricks: But what actually happened was you got close to, you touched a [00:42:00] limiting belief. Yeah. You got, you got literally singed-
Laura Stansberry: Yeah
Jodi Hendricks: by that limiting belief. That you had built something, that you started to see some success, started to see some money, and then you self-sabotaged to the point that- Mm-hmm ... you were like, what? I can't do this because what if I fail? Mm-hmm. Now there was something on the line.
Laura Stansberry: Yeah.
Jodi Hendricks: Right? Which is literally... I, I want to say like business 101, but it's not.
It's business sabotage 101. Right. That's exactly what happens- Yeah ... most of the time is that now there's something on the line. Right. Now there's skin in the game. Now I've shown myself, hey, I can make a little bit of money.
Laura Stansberry: Yeah.
Jodi Hendricks: But what if I was to make more money?
Laura Stansberry: Mm-hmm.
Jodi Hendricks: What if I was actually to be successful?
Mm-hmm. What if I actually touch six figures? And then you're just like, "Nope, nope, nope, nope, nope, nope,
Laura Stansberry: nope." Yeah.
Jodi Hendricks: Button it back up. Yeah. Close it back down. Mm. I'm not gonna do this.
Laura Stansberry: Yeah. And showing that realness and vulnerability is "Oh, absolutely not."
Jodi Hendricks: Yeah.
Laura Stansberry: Shut it all down.
Jodi Hendricks: Yeah. Wait, wait, wait.
Hold on. Yeah. How did that... So [00:43:00] in that world, whenever that was happening, like when you were getting nos- Mm-hmm ... were you getting nos for the family photos, or were you just not even putting it out there?
Laura Stansberry: I really wasn't, I, I really wasn't putting it out there, or even at the time, I did not... The nos I was getting were- Maybe too expensive, but not even really because I'm sure I was, like, mini doing mini sessions or something Yeah And then, but even then, at the same time, I was like, "I'm not doing $150 mini sessions.
If we're doing mini sessions, this is gonna be, like, $375," you know? We're-
Jodi Hendricks: Which you thought was so much money So much
Laura Stansberry: money
Jodi Hendricks: And you're like, "I'm so
Laura Stansberry: expensive." Crazy amounts of money.
Jodi Hendricks: Now she-
Laura Stansberry: So it was then-
Jodi Hendricks: Wait, hold on. Shh, shh, now she makes $2,000 a session, but okay, whatever.
Laura Stansberry: It's true.
Jodi Hendricks: I whispered that into my microphone.
Laura Stansberry: But I... Yeah, I mean, There really was, like, not even an ask, and if I wasn't getting a response, absolutely not was I gonna do the follow-up because-
Jodi Hendricks: Okay ...
Laura Stansberry: the no response- There
Jodi Hendricks: was no rolling out of bed ... the
Laura Stansberry: zero, and I don't even [00:44:00] mean no. I mean, silence was a no, so I wasn't even going to bother them further with my damn ask.
Jodi Hendricks: Interesting. Because as a, as a school photographer, you'd email them-
Laura Stansberry: A million ... to the, to the point,
Jodi Hendricks: to the point of questioning whether or not you were spam.
Laura Stansberry: Right. Yes.
Jodi Hendricks: And on the family photo side, it was just crickets.
Laura Stansberry: Cricket, crickets. It was a very- Yeah ... imbalanced-
Jodi Hendricks: Okay ...
Laura Stansberry: level of confidence.
Jodi Hendricks: Okay, so then fast-forw- so you spent all of this money- So
yeah, spent all of this money. Yeah. You were bleeding, hemorrhaging spending money on client closet, spending money on copywriters-
Laura Stansberry: The studio ...
Jodi Hendricks: website- All of it ... the studio, like, doing all of this. And so then you got yourself into the red in 2024 So
Laura Stansberry: far into the red.
Jodi Hendricks: Okay. Yeah. So then you were literally about to close your doors.
Laura Stansberry: Yeah, 'cause you would think at 2024, being that far in the red, you'd be like, and then my husband would be like, "We cannot continue to do this."
Jodi Hendricks: [00:45:00] Yeah.
Laura Stansberry: But I also had that dangling carrot of Santa that was already booked- Right ... by that point for the following year. Really probably- I remember that ... could have been b- booked two years because that's how-
Jodi Hendricks: In demand
Laura Stansberry: sought after Santa is.
Jodi Hendricks: Yeah.
Laura Stansberry: So I knew I had to maintain through 2025 no matter what in some way, 'cause I already had commitments all on the calendar for fall of 2025- Okay ... at the end of 2024. So I was like, "Okay," and then I, I was like, "Something's gotta change. If I'm gonna do this, something has got to change."
Jodi Hendricks: So then you came across some money.
Laura Stansberry: And then comes- ... April of 2025.
Jodi Hendricks: Yeah.
Laura Stansberry: And somewhere probably in February or March, I had gotten an invitation to a retreat, and my husband and I talked about it, and [00:46:00] I was like, "I'd really like to do this. I think there's some real value in this. If I'm going to even consider continuing, I know this is a huge expense to travel to this retreat, to pay for the retreat-
Jodi Hendricks: Mm-hmm
Laura Stansberry: to get an Airbnb, like, all of the things. But I really think there's some value in this." And we actually sat down with a piece of paper and wrote out the cost of the retreat, all of the speakers, and I looked up what would an hour of this person's ti- time cost?
Jodi Hendricks: Yeah.
Laura Stansberry: And I was like, okay, the va- the cost of the- Wait,
Jodi Hendricks: hold on, 'cause then you looked up mine and you were like, "This girl has nothing.
Laura Stansberry: This girl..." No, but this girl was like,
Jodi Hendricks: like- I wasn't fully blown an educator.
Laura Stansberry: I don't know if there was, like, something, 'cause I remember there being, like, a number next to your name. You must have had a one-on-one out there-
Jodi Hendricks: No ...
Laura Stansberry: somewhere. I have no idea.
Jodi Hendricks: I,
Laura Stansberry: I've
Jodi Hendricks: never been-
Laura Stansberry: But I just guesstimated.
Maybe I saw your session fee or something. You might
Jodi Hendricks: have, yeah, you might have done something like that, but- Who
Laura Stansberry: knows ...
Jodi Hendricks: I, even back then, [00:47:00] I didn't even have... I- there's no website. There's no website still.
Laura Stansberry: Yeah. But
Jodi Hendricks: you, I mean- There was nothing ...
Laura Stansberry: and I'm saying this part because you ha- I mean, I'm probab- I'm sure going to that retreat cost us at least $5,000.
Jodi Hendricks: Oh, at least.
Laura Stansberry: Between the cost of the retreat, food-
Jodi Hendricks: Yeah ...
Laura Stansberry: the airfare, you know, all of that. So it was not a cheap investment. No. And it wasn't something I could just randomly do.
Jodi Hendricks: But also, sidebar, can we talk about this for a second?
Laura Stansberry: Yeah.
Jodi Hendricks: When you're also going to retreats, you have to also know that there's- There's a bigger game at play.
Laura Stansberry: Yeah.
Jodi Hendricks: Right? That once you go to the retreats, each one of the educators are then going to be, like, talking about what their superpower is, how they can help- Totally ... how they can change your business. That's our job.
Laura Stansberry: Totally.
Jodi Hendricks: Right? So then you're calculating the cost of the retreat, but then you almost have to calculate the cost of okay, what if I fall in love with somebody there?
Laura Stansberry: Right.
Jodi Hendricks: What if I want more from somebody there? What if I resonate so hard [00:48:00] with somebody there that then there's going to be another added expense on the back end- Mm-hmm ... of that because I want to be in their system, which that's the whole point of the retreat- Right ... is so that you can really focus and really streamline and know where you wanna take your business.
Yeah. But whenever you're looking at the investment of the retreat, just kind of-
Laura Stansberry: Mm-hmm ...
Jodi Hendricks: know that there's also... It's, it's like buying an app, right? Yeah. And it's like, hey, there's in-app purchases. Right. It's your in- In-app purchase ...
Laura Stansberry: in-app purchase. Including for that particular retreat, I remember after the fact I decided while I was at the retreat something opened up for a shoot and learn and I'm like, purchase.
Jodi Hendricks: Yeah. And there
Laura Stansberry: was that. Another $350 or whatever it was. Was
Jodi Hendricks: that Shannon?
Laura Stansberry: No, 'cause basically I went to that retreat to work with Shannon
Jodi Hendricks: Oh, and I stole you.
Laura Stansberry: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
Jodi Hendricks: Shannon's never- Mm-hmm. I'm gonna call her after this. She- She, she's gonna be so mad.
Laura Stansberry: Yeah. So I-
Jodi Hendricks: I'm just kidding. We- But that was my- We do completely different things.
Shannon is one of my absolute best friends. Yeah. So
Laura Stansberry: we're keeping. But that was my big draw. Out of [00:49:00] everybody there, I'm sure there were people I knew or heard of. Obviously, I knew the tre- or retreat organizer, and I knew a few... I didn't actually know anybody who was going to the retreat, but I was like, "I'm sure this will be great.
I really wanna do the shoot and learn with Shannon. At the end of the day, that is I could never even pay what I'm paying for this whole retreat and travel to do a shoot and learn with Shannon."
Jodi Hendricks: Yeah.
Laura Stansberry: She's- So this was, like- ...
Jodi Hendricks: phenomenal ...
Laura Stansberry: crazy. Yeah. So it was, and so that was, like, my thing, if I got nothing else out.
And then I was literally front row center seat at this retreat, and w- I find this shocking still, I didn't know who you were.
Jodi Hendricks: Yeah.
Laura Stansberry: I had never heard your name. 'Cause
Jodi Hendricks: I wasn't-
Laura Stansberry: I didn't, I was not in the wedding world ever.
Jodi Hendricks: Yeah.
Laura Stansberry: So I, and even you, you always get this person follows this person. Do you wanna follow, blah, blah, blah.
I had not, I did not know who Jody Ann was.
Jodi Hendricks: And as a, as just a timeline of all of this, too, the, this [00:50:00] podcast- Mm-hmm ... had just launched a month prior. The Posers podcast maybe had six or seven episodes to it. Mm-hmm. Nothing.
Laura Stansberry: I had not listened- so ... to any of those. Yeah. I think I went back to my Airbnb that night and listened to podcasts.
Jodi Hendricks: Yeah. So- I was brand new on the scene. I had The Posying Method for five years prior to that. Mm-hmm. But I had just hired a team, just decided I'm gonna go into education. Mm-hmm. I literally, it was my very first dip in the pond. Yeah. You know? Right. So that's why it's like you had no idea who I was.
Laura Stansberry: Yeah.
Jodi Hendricks: But also little side brag, look at what- Feel like it was kismet ... but look at what we have now. I know. Look at the Posers podcast now.
Laura Stansberry: I know. That
Jodi Hendricks: was only a year ago.
Laura Stansberry: Mm-hmm. A year. Little- And a handful of months ...
Jodi Hendricks: little pat on my back.
Laura Stansberry: I know. Look at you
Jodi Hendricks: go. I, yeah. Right? I literally said at the beginning of this podcast, I'm like, "We're not here to celebrate me.
We're not here to celebrate Laura." And now I'm like, "Oh, pat, pat, pat. Look at me." But look, but look at what we've done. But look at what we've [00:51:00] done.
Outro: Okay, so that is a wrap on this episode of the Posers Podcast.
